Are they using backchannels?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t heard of a backchannel before, it\u2019s those little \u201cMhmm\u201ds and \u201cUh huh\u201ds that people drop into conversations to signal to the other person that they heard\u2014and understood\u2014what they were saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katie Fitzpatrick, a sign language interpreter and adjunct professor in Beginning ASL to English and Fundamentals of Interpreting and Transliterating at Madonna University, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says that in online meetings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can be a bit difficult to express our thoughts as clearly as they appear in our heads<sup>1<\/sup>. Things get lost in translation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, she recommends paying attention to the other people in your meeting and making sure that you\u2019re getting these backchannels as you\u2019re speaking, even if it\u2019s just someone nodding as you speak. \u201cIt does not mean that they agree with you,\u201d says Katie, \u201cBut just nodding along to understand and show acknowledgement of what\u2019s being said.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/remote-work-playbook.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3525\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/490719603-WFH-Remote-Work-Playbook-banner-image-1380x490-blog-1024x364-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #434343; padding-top: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. How are their shoulders?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone talks about eye contact and hand gestures when it comes to nonverbal cues, but did you know that the shoulders tell you a lot about how someone is doing too?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Laurie Achin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a deaf faculty member in Northeastern University\u2019s American Sign Language department, \u201cfrustration is all in the shoulders. When someone\u2019s shoulders are tensed, or scrunched up towards their ears, they are uncomfortable or frustrated. When the shoulders are relaxed and back, the person is content.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if you want to know if your coworker is frustrated at how long this meeting is taking\u2026 their shoulders might give you a clue!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #434343; padding-top: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Are they looking at you?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the big reasons why people don\u2019t like turning on their video during video calls is because the other person can see exactly when you stop paying attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t look away, check your phone, or read something else\u2014well, you can, but it would be obvious and your teammates probably won\u2019t like it very much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye contact is especially important on video calls because you\u2019re not in the same room as someone else and there are other cues you\u2019re missing out on (like the nuances in how they\u2019re seated\u2014are they leaning toward you?) that tell you how focused the other person is on your conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining eye contact is a good way to show someone you\u2019re engaged and interested in what they\u2019re saying\u2014and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #434343; padding-top: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. What are they saying with their tone?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ah, words. Sure, they\u2019re important, but so is the tone in which they\u2019re being said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a flat, disinterested tone, then it won\u2019t matter that you\u2019re saying \u201cThis is the best quarter we\u2019ve ever had,\u201d because it won\u2019t sound like a celebration\u2014it just sounds boring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with tone, there\u2019s volume, flow, inflection\u2026 you can tell a lot about someone\u2019s state of mind based on the tone of voice they\u2019re using. Try to notice how your coworkers (and how you yourself) communicate using your voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #434343; padding-top: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. What are their facial expressions implying?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the face is probably the main thing someone pays attention to when they\u2019re talking to someone, you could argue that facial expressions are one of the least useful nonverbal cues if you want to gauge someone\u2019s interest in a conversation while on a video call.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the human face is super expressive, you have to remember that you\u2019re seeing it through a screen\u2014and from a certain distance. And unless you and your coworkers are using super HD cameras, you\u2019re going to miss out on the tiny details and changes in each other\u2019s facial expressions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, in most video <a class=\"waffle-rich-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/free-conference-call.html\">conference calls<\/a>\u2014for work anyway\u2014you probably won\u2019t be talking about subjects that are so exciting that someone\u2019s facial expressions will change all that much.
