Within a year at the company, Connor was gone\u2014the fourth employee on the team to leave that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all heard stories\u2014or experienced ourselves\u2014of colleagues and friends who worked for terrible bosses, and more often than not, micromanagement is to blame. There\u2019s no greater way to demoralize a team than Big Brother incessantly checking on employees\u2019 productivity at every opportunity, waiting to pounce on them for any signs of non-work related activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent events have led to a new form of micromanagement that goes beyond the office and is impacting remote employees around the world. Let\u2019s understand this new era of work, and why eliminating micromanagement is essential to driving business success for every organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The rise of COVID-19 employee monitoring<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When COVID-19 struck, remote work transformed from a generous employee perk to business necessity overnight. Employees everywhere suddenly had their traditional in-office work schedules turned upside down. A Gallup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/206033\/america-coming-workplace-home-alone.aspx?utm_source=link_wwwv9&amp;amp;utm_campaign=item_236222&amp;amp;utm_medium=copy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 63% of Americans shifted from office environments to working from home, all in under two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019d think that with the widespread adoption of remote work, employees would have significantly more freedom from their previously strict nine-to-five work schedules. After all, bosses aren\u2019t several feet away breathing down their employees\u2019 necks waiting for projects to finish. Employees could strategize their schedules and work when they feel most productive. It\u2019s every employee\u2019s dream work scenario, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, for many employees, this isn\u2019t the case. Micromanagement has taken on a new form in the COVID-19 era of remote work. We see this in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/enriquedans\/2020\/04\/10\/micromanagement-doesnt-work-in-the-office-so-why-inflict-it-on-people-working-fromhome\/#7694c8144c85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unprecedented proliferation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of employee surveillance software such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timedoctor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time Doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/activtrak.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ActivTrack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hubstaff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hubstaff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as companies around the world purchased these tools in droves as they sent employees home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These apps are installed on employee computers to actively track employee productivity at all times. Some simply collect and report usage habits that help managers adapt their work-from-home strategy. Some, however, allow managers to remotely view their employees\u2019 screens, and evaluate parameters such as lines of code typed, emails sent. Some even go so far as to automatically clock employees out when they\u2019ve been away for too long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/05\/13\/854014403\/your-boss-is-watching-you-work-from-home-boom-leads-to-more-surveillance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anonymous worker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Minnesota told NPR:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re idle for a few minutes, if you go to the bathroom or whatever, a pop-up will come up and it&#8217;ll say, &#8216;You have 60 seconds to start working again or we&#8217;re going to pause your time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Newly remote bosses are to blame<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s behind the sudden interest in monitoring remote employees\u2019 every move? The pre-COVID-19 remote work landscape gives us a clue. According to Gartner, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-04-14-gartner-hr-survey-reveals-41--of-employees-likely-to-#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWhile%2030%25%20of%20employees%20surveyed,for%20the%20Gartner%20HR%20practice.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 30% of employees had ever worked remotely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or flexibly before the pandemic. That means 70% of workers had never experienced a consistent remote-work arrangement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both employees and managers entered the COVID-19 uncharted territory without any prior experience, and naturally, this leads to a lack of trust. As Alison Green, founder of workplace advice website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askamanager.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask A Manager<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, puts it:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause [bosses] don\u2019t know how to effectively manage people who are remote, they don\u2019t feel like they have enough control, and they\u2019re getting very anxious about accountability, and whether people are taking advantage of them, and they\u2019re micromanaging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because COVID-19 hurled so many managers into newly remote positions, their inexperience in remote work leads them to believe that employees default to slacking off when they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/wfh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work from home<\/a>. As a result, they\u2019ve turned to tactics such as forcing employees to alert them of every break, placing time limits on messaging and email replies, and installing screen monitoring software on employee computers that bosses can tune into remotely at any time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why remote micromanaging just doesn\u2019t work<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one likes having managers constantly scrutinizing their every move like an Orwellian dystopia. Employees with micromanaging bosses are often paranoid and second-guess their work, leading to lower productivity and creativity. They live in constant fear of harsh criticism and retaliation from their managers for every little mistake. Most importantly, they feel that their managers don\u2019t trust them\u2014and trust is everything in the remote work world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of these negative impacts add up to one major result: low employee engagement. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/karlynborysenko\/2019\/05\/02\/how-much-are-your-disengaged-employees-costing-you\/#3929e5334376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Gallup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, disengaged employees have 37% higher absenteeism, 18% lower productivity, and 15% lower profitability. Moreover, disengaged employees have a significantly higher chance of leaving for better opportunities. After all, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-ddi-research-57-percent-of-employees-quit-because-of-their-boss-300971506.html#:~:text=New%20DDI%20Research%3A%2057%20Percent%20of%20Employees%20Quit%20Because%20of%20Their%20Boss,-New%20data%20from&amp;text=PITTSBURGH%2C%20Dec.&amp;text=New%20data%20published%20in%20DDI's,and%20relationships%20of%20frontline%20managers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">57% of employees quit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of their bosses\u2014not their jobs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, organizations with a highly-engaged workforce <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/products\/170969\/q12-employee-engagement-center.aspx#:~:text=In%20fact%2C%20we've%20found,for%20a%20firm%20like%20yours.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outperform their competitors by 147%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in earnings per share. This is the combined advantage of higher productivity, retention, collaboration, and innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ending micromanagement through better communication<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many organizations begin to plan their business recovery and continuity strategies, extending remote work is one of the biggest options on the table. Leaders are prioritizing employee safety in the midst of a possible second COVID-19 wave, and keeping employees out of offices is the best way to do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, a recent Gartner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-04-03-gartner-cfo-surey-reveals-74-percent-of-organizations-to-shift-some-employees-to-remote-work-permanently2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 317 CFOs revealed that 74% of companies plan to permanently shift to more remote work post-COVID-19. Nearly a quarter of those plan to move 20% of their on-site employees to permanent remote positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering that remote and flexible work options are here to stay, there\u2019s no better time for organizations to reevaluate their management and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/collaboration-styles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collaboration styles<\/a> than now.
