The Silicon Valley giants saw the looming threat of COVID-19, evaluated their preparedness, and decided that they were ready to enable a mass work-from-home event way before most other organizations were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no wonder that big tech is weathering the storm significantly better than most. Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google all show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d2e09235-b28e-438d-9b55-0e6bab7ac8ec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive signs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of resilience despite most of their workforces out of the office. As far as big tech is concerned, business operations haven\u2019t really changed much. In fact, companies like Apple and Microsoft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/the-us-job-market-had-its-worst-month-in-history-but-apple-and-amazon-are-still-hiring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continue to hire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most organizations in the country, however, don\u2019t share the same luck. A Gartner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-03-10-gartner-business-continuity-survey-shows-just-twelve-percernt-of-organizations-are-highly-prepared-for-coronavirsu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that only 12% of organizations were ready to manage disruptions caused by COVID-19. Many simply didn\u2019t have the infrastructure, training, or experience to support prolonged remote work, resorting to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/we-really-werent-ready-to-work-from-home\/2020\/04\/27\/a209f9f4-8850-11ea-80df-d24b35a568ae_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panic buying<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and implementing technologies left and right with unprecedented urgency. Businesses simply weren\u2019t prepared for a crisis like this, and they\u2019re paying the price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the initial shock wears off and businesses stabilize, leaders have started to re-evaluate their remote work and business continuity plans to avoid future periods of disruption. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/us\/en\/library\/covid-19\/pwc-covid-19-cfo-pulse-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by PwC found that finance leaders are planning to pivot toward measures that improve business resilience and agility, with 68% of respondents putting work flexibility as their number one priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Remote work drives business operations through tough times<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexjobs.com\/blog\/post\/flexjobs-gwa-report-remote-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growth increased 159%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2005 and 2017, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.linkedin.com\/talent-solutions\/blog\/talent-leadership\/2019\/flexible-work-not-a-perk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">78% increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in job listings posted on LinkedIn within two years that offered flexible work perks. The reality on the ground was much different, however. Only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/03\/working-from-home-coronavirus-workers-future-of-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% of workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had the luxury of regularly working from home, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/hr-topics\/talent-acquisition\/pages\/flexible-work-critical-retention.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">94%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wanted more flexible work options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When COVID-19 struck, however, remote work transformed from an employee privilege to business necessity overnight. Employees everywhere suddenly had their traditional in-office work schedules turned upside down. A Gallup <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/businessjournal\/206033\/america-coming-workplace-home-alone.aspx?utm_source=link_wwwv9&amp;amp;utm_campaign=item_236222&amp;amp;utm_medium=copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 63% of Americans shifted from office environments to working from home, all in under two months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To many experts\u2019 surprise, the shift to remote work has actually exceeded expectations. Organizations have been able to continue business operations despite being distributed. According to a Deloitte <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/us\/Documents\/finance\/us-deloitte-covid-19-cfo-poll-results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 75% of CFOs say their companies are operating at 80% capacity or higher. While it\u2019s no stretch that businesses are struggling during the crisis, findings show that the mass remote work situation isn\u2019t as bad as leaders anticipated. In fact, leaders are now<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the true value of remote work, going so far as to announce permanent work from anywhere flexibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the employee perspective, working from home isn\u2019t so bad either. A CNBC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/curiosity\/cnbc-workforce-survey-may-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 38% of employees are happier with their jobs now than they were in previous months. Employees with flexible work schedules show less stress and burnout while being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/victorlipman\/2016\/05\/02\/are-remote-workers-happier-and-more-productive-new-survey-offers-answers\/#4aeb8b666663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happier, more engaged, and more productive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Organizations with highly-engaged employees have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236366\/right-culture-not-employee-satisfaction.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">59% less turnover<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and achieve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/236366\/right-culture-not-employee-satisfaction.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21% greater profitability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The intersection between remote work and business continuity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As shelter-at-home restrictions ease across the world, the return to work won\u2019t be sudden. Organizations will have to enact safety measures to prioritize employee health or have employees continue working from home. In many cases, the latter might be a better option. Cubicles and open offices cram as many employees into small spaces as possible, and it\u2019s simply not feasible with the virus still floating around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business leaders have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalworkplaceanalytics.com\/work-at-home-after-covid-19-our-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">realized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that, in order to continue operations, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work is essential to their business continuity plans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A Gartner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2020-04-03-gartner-cfo-surey-reveals-74-percent-of-organizations-to-shift-some-employees-to-remote-work-permanently2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on 317 CFOs revealed that 74% of companies plan to permanently shift to more remote work post-COVID-19, with nearly a quarter planning to move 20% of their on-site employees to permanent remote positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shelter-at-home orders gave managers and executives a first-hand look at the advantages of remote work. Seeing operations continue and employees productive, leaders became much more receptive to work flexibility. In fact, forward-thinking organizations such as Facebook and Twitter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/05\/07\/facebook-to-allow-most-employees-to-work-from-home-through-end-of-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that employees can work from home until the end of 2020\u2014a monumental step toward the future of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Unified communications are vital to the future of employee collaboration<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As companies geared up for remote work, demand for cloud communications tools reached a critical mass. Business app downloads <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appannie.com\/en\/insights\/market-data\/video-conferencing-apps-surge-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased by 90%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March compared to the previous year, with video conferencing and team messaging tools taking the spotlight. Organizations realized that these tools are essential for employees to effectively collaborate with their teams from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue, however, is that most organizations were forced to cobble together temporary technology solutions that aren\u2019t optimized to work synergistically or match with long-term IT goals. These disparate solutions might have been solid short-term Band-Aids to survive the pandemic, but don\u2019t make sound solutions down the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest concerns is the overabundance of technology. Having an app for each mode of communication\u2014team messaging, video conferencing, and cloud phone\u2014means employees need to manage several different apps at the same time. Studies show that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/netstorage.ringcentral.com\/documents\/connected_workplace_infographic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">68% of employees toggle between 10 apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a single hour, with some even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20170918005033\/en\/Information-App-Overload-Hurts-Worker-Productivity-Focus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">juggling up to 15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
