{"id":38397,"date":"2016-09-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newrcblog.wpengine.com\/modernization-panel-recap\/"},"modified":"2025-06-27T00:35:38","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T07:35:38","slug":"modernization-panel-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/us\/en\/blog\/modernization-panel-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"Dispatch from ConnectCentral: Modernizing Business Communications, Freedom from Infrastructure, and Much More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/KID-5904-UserConference2016_Modernization_Blog_r1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19539\" src=\"\/us\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/KID-5904-UserConference2016_Modernization_Blog_r1.png\" alt=\"kid-5904-userconference2016_modernization_blog_r1\" width=\"640\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a>For those of you who were not able to attend our inaugural user conference, ConnectCentral, or catch the sessions we streamed over the web, suffice it to say, the conference was well attended and critically acclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>On day two, I led a panel discussion, \u201cModernization of Business Communications.\u201d\u00a0The members of the panel included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/2016\/08\/see-ringcentral-powers-extraordinary-customer-engagement-cresa\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Nuss<\/a>, Senior Vice President of IT at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cresa.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cresa Partners<\/a> (the world\u2019s largest tenant-only commercial real estate firm)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.box.com\/blog\/welcoming-new-cio-paul-chapman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Chapman<\/a>, CIO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.box.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Box<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/2016\/09\/see-how-the-nations-first-and-largest-graduate-school-of-education-uses-ringcentral-to-maintain-its-reputation-and-leadership-position\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naveed Husain<\/a>, CIO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tc.columbia.edu\/abouttc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teachers College, Columbia University<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The theme the panel explored is very close to home for all of us. In different ways and to different degrees, we\u2019re all working each day to implement and enhance nimble, scalable, easy to manage, cost-effective, omnichannel communications solutions that meet the needs of today\u2019s mobile and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/solutions\/enterprise-business.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">globally distributed enterprises<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The members of the panel had a lively discussion that spanned the evolution of business communications systems from wiring closets to the cloud; the various approaches organizations in different industry sectors are taking to employ and leverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/how-it-works.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloud-based business communications systems<\/a>; and how the capabilities provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/product-how-it-works.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RingCentral<\/a> in particular are being rolled out across organizations and integrated with other key technologies and platforms.<\/p>\n<p>A common point of departure for all of our panelists was the importance of knowing and listening to your users. Increasingly, as Paul Chapman pointed out, there is an expectation of a great, barrier-free, simple, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/technology\/user-experience.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-quality user experience<\/a>. As he explained, an employee base that increasingly was born digital; grew up educated by the Googles, the Apples, and the Amazons; that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/rcmobile\/overview.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobile first <\/a>(if not mobile only), doesn\u2019t even think about adoption of the cloud. They\u2019re already there, and they come to work with an expectation that their employers will provide them with the comprehensive suite of communication tools they need to do their jobs efficiently and effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Users are also beginning to experience \u201capp fatigue,\u201d as Dave Nuss described it. They\u2019re tired of having to learn how to use multiple apps and to jump from app to app to accomplish various tasks. They want the functionality to do their work on the same platform without having to waste time. Business just moves too fast these days, and every wasted minute grates on employees, and that, ultimately, is reflected in overall organizational performance.<\/p>\n<p>Among the keywords repeated throughout the discussion were: <em>speed<\/em>, <em>ease-of-use<\/em>, <em>always available<\/em>, and <em>collaborative<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dave introduced some new catch phrases that I\u2019m sure will begin to circulate throughout attendees\u2019 organizations. In describing Cresa\u2019s overarching approach to its communications challenges and requirements, he said, \u201cFor us, it was just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/phone-system-features.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloud first<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/rcmobile\/overview.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobile mandatory<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s a simple phrase, but it encapsulates a lot of what we\u2019re all shooting for in terms of delivering on our users\u2019 expectations.<\/p>\n<p>He also talked about \u201cfreedom from infrastructure.\u201d You didn\u2019t have to be in the room to feel the heads nodding in agreement. No one wants to be tied to or tangled up in individual wiring closets for every location anymore. And it\u2019s not necessary. \u201cCloud,\u201d he added, \u201cgives us a better value for our dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moving its business communications system to the cloud actually enabled Teachers College, Columbia University, to eliminate its dedicated telecom department. \u201cFor us,\u201d Naveed Husain explained, \u201cmoving to the cloud, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/technology\/overview.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RingCentral in particular<\/a>, meant moving telecom out of a telecom section and into an app that can be supported by the service desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The geographic redundancy provided by RingCentral, along with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/technology\/integrations-apis.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">integrations<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/ringcentral-for-google\/overview.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Apps<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/microsoft-pbx-integration\/overview.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft 365<\/a>, are widely used at Teachers College and were a huge plus in delivering on user expectations.<\/p>\n<p>At Box, as Paul described, \u201cfreedom of infrastructure\u201d frees up budget, increases speed, and most importantly, allows IT staff \u201cto focus more time and energy on the things that differentiate you in the marketplace.\u201d When you\u2019re forced to manage infrastructure, he added, \u201cthere are things you don\u2019t do that could strategically differentiate you and transform the way you run your business. By moving those infrastructure management things out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/technology\/security.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trusted partners like RingCentral<\/a>, you free up time to focus on things that add value to your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave echoed the importance and significance of pushing out infrastructure to trusted partners. \u201cWe realized that no matter how much money we threw at our telecom infrastructure, and no matter how we partnered with single instance applications, we were never going to get to where we are with RingCentral.
