Despite the popularity of the mobile phone, 83% of employees still have a desk phone. With the advancement of the increasingly mobile and tech savvy workforce, the mix of devices and platforms employees rely on is changing and diversifying rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>In May of 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RingCentral<\/a> commissioned a survey to delve deeper into the trends and insights of knowledge workers. The goal of the survey was to understand the prevalence of the desk phone today and how today\u2019s workers best communicate. Among the 505 individuals surveyed, 30% prefer to take calls from their mobile phone, 65% from their desk phone and only 5% via a laptop or desktop software. Contrary to some beliefs that the desk phone will soon be dead in the workplace, the survey proved the opposite: even with the rise of mobile, desktop and collaboration tools, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nojitter.com\/post\/240170568\/3-reasons-desk-phones-are-on-retirement-fast-track\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">desk phone might be headed towards retirement<\/a>, but isn\u2019t dead yet.<\/p>\n<p>Participants of the survey were asked if they agree or disagree that business calls from a desk phone are in decline. Even if workers still use their desk phones, over half said they believe the desk phone is in decline. \u00a0In fact, our survey showed employees\u2019 preference for working, and other technologies are rising up and threatening the desk phone\u2019s early retirement<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despite the rise of the <a href=\"\/blog\/2014\/09\/5-ways-cloud-phone-system-improves-remote-workforce-productivity-friday-five\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mobile workforce<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/2014\/05\/infographic-is-byod-clouding-the-minds-of-workers\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BYOD<\/a> (bring your own device) trends, 46% of workers cite that <a href=\"\/blog\/2014\/09\/business-comply-california-court-byod-ruling\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employers don&#8217;t pay for their cell phone<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>65% say they\u2019d like to have a separate phone number that allows them to accept <a class=\"waffle-rich-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/lp\/small-business-phone-service.html\">business phone<\/a> calls on their personal mobile device.<\/li>\n<li>31% use <a class=\"waffle-rich-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/video-call.html\">video calls<\/a> often or very often.<\/li>\n<li>26% of people do not find voicemails a reliable way to leave messages because they don&#8217;t check voicemails or only check occasionally. Among those surveyed 62% of people would like to have a voicemail service that translates voice messages to text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what\u2019s keeping businesses from trading in legacy desk phones for sleeker alternatives? Clearly employees are relying more frequently on alternative methods of communication from video calling to using their mobile phones, and relying less on functions associated with traditional PBX phone systems like voicemails.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re still years away from killing the desk phone, but it does seem to be heading for retirement. We hear from our customers that the desk phone hasn\u2019t kept up with the way people work today and employees don\u2019t want to feel tethered to a desk. At the same time, mobile phone and <a href=\"\/blog\/2015\/09\/5-ways-glip-will-change-the-way-you-work\/?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collaboration technology<\/a> is rapidly improving. Workers find it more convenient to take a call from their mobile phone and they now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/office\/features\/rcmobile\/overview.html?BMID=BLOGNEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have technology that makes this feasible<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the desk phone isn\u2019t dead, employees are pushing for alternative technologies.
