Have you ever watched a media interview on local TV news and thought a spokesperson just made their company look, well, just really bad?\u00a0Or, you read a local newspaper article that featured a \u201cno comment\u201d line from a spokesperson and felt that someone might be a little shady?<\/p>\n

There are plenty of ways to botch a media interview and leave a lasting (and negative) impression on potential customers and key audiences. It\u2019s actually pretty easy to do if you\u2019ve never had a media interview before and don\u2019t spend any time preparing for it.<\/p>\n

To help you and your small business prep for a media interview, whether it\u2019s on the phone or in front of a camera, here are 20 do\u2019s and don\u2019ts to keep in mind.<\/p>\n

Media interview dos<\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. <\/b>Do<\/b> prepare and approach your interview from the public\u2019s viewpoint.<\/li>\n
  2. <\/b>Do<\/b> assume every word you say will be quoted.<\/li>\n
  3. <\/b>Do<\/b> keep to the facts and keep answers short and to the point.<\/li>\n
  4. <\/b>Do<\/b> be authoritative and confident.<\/li>\n
  5. <\/b>Do<\/b> make your delivery anecdotal and conversational.<\/li>\n
  6. <\/b>Do <\/b>provide examples, analogies or metaphors when relevant.<\/li>\n
  7. <\/b>Do<\/b> cite sources when necessary.<\/li>\n
  8. <\/b>Do<\/b> be yourself and be honest.<\/li>\n
  9. <\/b>Do<\/b> conduct phone interviews via landline, unless mobile is absolutely necessary. With a landline, you won\u2019t have to worry about a dropped call or poor reception.<\/li>\n
  10. <\/b>Do<\/b> dress for the occasion if you\u2019re going on TV for an interview. Avoid all white and busy designs with a lot of color.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Media interview don\u2019ts (with tips)<\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. <\/b>Don\u2019t ever wing an interview.<\/strong> Like any other interview in life, it pays to prepare. Have a Q&A session with a colleague and set yourself up with three to four key points you\u2019d like to communicate during the interview.<\/li>\n
    2. <\/b>Don\u2019t conduct an impromptu interview if a reporter contacts you directly.<\/strong> If you do, you won\u2019t have time to prepare.<\/li>\n
    3. Don\u2019t ever go off the record or say \u201cno comment\u201d.<\/strong> Everything you say during an interview can be quoted. And, instead of saying \u201cno comment,\u201d say you are unsure of the answer or cannot discuss it. You can also ask a reporter if you can follow up with an answer before the end of day.<\/li>\n
    4. Don\u2019t ever argue with a reporter.<\/strong> All it takes is one soured relationship for a reporter to never interview you again.<\/li>\n
    5. Don\u2019t talk too much and go off on tangents.<\/strong> Try speaking in soundbites and, when appropriate, make comments that are two to three sentences long.<\/li>\n
    6. Don\u2019t answer mechanically.<\/strong> Be loose and conversational.<\/li>\n
    7. Don\u2019t speculate or exaggerate.<\/strong> Stick to the facts, or you might have to back up your statements at a later date.<\/li>\n
    8. Don\u2019t disparage your competition.<\/strong> It\u2019s not polite to talk bad about others. If a question comes up about your competition, let a reporter know you can\u2019t speak for other businesses, then transition back to your message.<\/li>\n
    9. Don\u2019t drop your guard when the interview is over.<\/strong> It\u00a0wouldn’t\u00a0be good if you said something out-of-context and the camera was still rolling.<\/li>\n
    10. Don\u2019t ask to see a story before it runs.<\/strong> Unless it\u2019s an advertorial, it\u2019s not going through you for approval. If there is a factual mistake in an online or print story after it runs, follow up with the reporter and politely ask for a correction.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      And, one last thing to keep in mind: you should always view your media interviews as a win-win opportunity.<\/p>\n
