Many corporate leaders like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virgin.com\/richard-branson\/blog\/give-people-the-freedom-of-where-to-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virgin&#8217;s\u00a0Richard Branson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jjcolao\/2013\/02\/26\/marissa-mayer-is-wrong-freedom-for-workers-means-productivity-for-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oDesk CEO\u00a0Gary Swart<\/a> were quick to criticize Yahoo&#8217;s move, arguing that their employees are <em>more<\/em> productive when working from home (in contrast to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who suggested the opposite).<\/p>\n<p>We at RingCentral think this debate is missing the point. Most businesses aren\u2019t trying to decide IF they will allow telecommuting &#8211; <strong>they\u2019re struggling with HOW they\u2019ll maximize the productivity of their mobile workforces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Distributed workforces are a reality today. According to the Families and Work Institute, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/about-shrm\/press-room\/press-releases\/pages\/nationalstudyemployers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nearly two-thirds of people<\/a> (63 percent) work remotely at least some of the time. That&#8217;s twice the rate of just eight years ago.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s enabling the sharp increase in remote work?\u00a0Cultural evolution is playing a\u00a0role, the key drivers are technology mega-trends. Broadband penetration <a href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2012\/09\/04\/90-of-us-households-with-computers-have-broadband\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is at an all-time high<\/a> here in the U.S. Nearly as pervasive as broadband are smartphones and tablets &#8211; 66 percent of business employees have at least two mobile devices for work.
