5. Wireless weightliftingWelcome back to the 2016 Cloud Office Games where you’ve joined us in the middle of the Wireless Weightlifting. This is one of the most technically challenging events in the entire Office Games line up.

Today we have two very different competitors taking to the arena. One has opted for very traditional methods, whilst the other has chosen a far more modern approach. Let’s see how this plays out.

The Challenge

Our participants are competing in the telephony discipline. As we know, the business telephone is the life-blood of any modern business. They must be able to carry the weight of new and ever evolving business demands, whilst being technically superior.

Winning Tactics

Our competitors are looking to master four key areas:

1) Efficiency: This is a question of how many resources are required to train, operate the equipment and stay constantly in good shape. It looks like the cloud-based competitor has the edge here, seeing as all technical requirements are managed off-site and there are no technical complications getting in the way.

2) Productivity: This is a measure of their ability to focus on getting the job done rather than managing the equipment and making compromises. This is where the participant with on-site servers will begin to show some weaknesses. Unlike the cloud contender, they often struggle to integrate with mobile technology, making it extremely difficult to compete at other venues.

3) Capex: With the traditional PBX approach, there is a large upfront initial cost. However, with no capital outlay, the cloud enables smaller competitors to enter the arena and compete on a whole new level.

4) Opex: Participants will strongly need to consider the ongoing costs of maintenance, upgrades and training. The competitor with on-site servers will need to fork out regularly in order to keep up with technical demands and stay in tip-top condition, whereas the cloud contender just has one manageable monthly payment and everything is taken care of.

The Outcome

It’s no surprise the cloud came out on top. Just look at how much easier it is to manage without the need to bulk up on all the expensive resources.

By 2020 it is expected we’ll all be competing in a cloud-first world. One thing is very clear in this contest; why struggle with the methods of the past when the cloud can free up all your resources so you focus on what you do best?
