Happy Cyber Monday, everyone! ‘Tis the season to be buying – online, that is – and one of the best ways to appreciate the spirit of this season is to look back at everything that makes it special. To help you celebrate this exciting day of deals, RingCentral is sharing some fascinating facts about today:
- Cyber Monday was a term originally coined in 2005 to describe the post-Black Friday phenomenon in which the number of people who shop online spikes. Online entrepreneurs have since started to offer amazing deals on this day, further increasing its popularity. (Remember to brush up on your e-commerce customer service!)
- Cyber Monday has become one of the most anticipated e-commerce events of the year. It effectively wraps up a weekend-long shopping period which includes both Black Friday and the newly established Small Business Saturday (a holiday which RingCentral wholeheartedly supports). Despite this, it’s STILL not the biggest online shopping event of the year – that would be Green Monday, or the second Monday in December.
- Last year, consumers spent more than $1 billion on Cyber Monday – a considerable jump from 2009’s $887 million. That wasn’t the biggest year-over-year jump in Cyber Monday activity, however: Between 2006 and 2007, Cyber Monday spending rose from $610 million to $730 million.
- It is estimated that 33.6% of shoppers will log on to the internet in order to shop this year. Some are predicting that the hottest-selling items will be entertainment hardware like Blu-Ray players, high-definition television sets and game consoles. Electronic items like smartphones are also likely to be popular purchases this season.
