During the world’s largest gathering of IT decision makers, Gartner Symposium conference in Orlando in October 2016, RingCentral took the opportunity to speak to show attendees to get an impression of their top IT priorities for 2017.

We’ve highlighted some of the key takeaways in this handy infographic, and elaborated further below on some of the highlights.

Digital Transformation Takes Center Stage

If there was a single theme to the results, it was that an overwhelming 93% of respondents believe that digital transformation is a priority for their organizations in 2017, compared to only 2% who said it was not a priority, and 5% who were unsure.

2017 IT Spending Priorities

We asked IT decision makers about their investment priorities for 2017. The top three spending priorities revealed that 63% of IT folks named security as the top priority. Driving positive customer experience and engagement is closely tied to digital transformation, so it’s no surprise that 59% of IT is making this one of their top priorities. Finally, the third most important area investment was moving to the cloud.

Predictions on Moving to the Cloud

Many enterprises are still in the early innings of transitioning their systems to the cloud, especially those involving larger, more complex legacy applications. To get a sense of where enterprise IT decision makers stand today on their journey to the cloud, we asked them to tell us what percentage of applications they are currently running reside in the cloud.

Communications in the Cloud

We asked our respondents to tell us what is motivating them to look at moving their communications to the cloud. Out of a broad range of motivating factors, the most important was scalability and manageability, winning 31% of the votes as the top driving force for cloud communications. This suggests that the legacy systems many enterprises are using today are not very scalable or manageable. Cost savings came second with 24%, and agility third at 12% as reasons for moving communications to the cloud.

We found wide endorsement of the concept of mobile enablement as a key driver for cloud communications adoption. But a lot of work still remains to implement that goal. Fully 66% of our respondents said they believe “Mobility is a crucial factor for employee success.” Yet only 19% said their IT departments said they have maximized the opportunities for mobile enablement. And only 13% said they believed that their organization has acted to eliminate or reduce the number of physical desk phones and replace them with softphones.

This wraps up our key findings from Gartner Symposium. Tell us what your 2017 IT priorities are in the comments below or by tweeting us @RingCentral.
