Have you noticed a significant drop in engagement on your Facebook Page? If the answer is “Yes”, you’re not alone. With a simple Google search, you’ll find a lot of chatter around this very topic. There are several possibilities for the engagement decline: an increase in platform competition, a drop in Facebook users, a decline in time spent on Facebook and boredom with taking the same actions on Facebook over and over again. But don’t give up just yet! While it may be harder to grab Facebook users’ attention and motivate them to engage, it’s certainly not time to throw in the towel.
Instead, get creative and strive to stand out. Here are five surefire ways to boost your Facebook Page engagement:
1) Less Is More. Posts with lots of text generally get overlooked on Facebook. If you want the Facebook community to read your posts, keep them short … very short! One to two sentences should be all it takes to get your message across.
The same rule applies for asking your Facebook community to take action. If every post requires some type of action – such as liking, commenting or sharing – you’ll wear people out. Mix things up and provide useful information without a call to action and you’ll start seeing an uptick in engagement on posts that do encourage certain actions.
2) Evoke Emotion. Hilarious, heartwarming, beautiful and thought-provoking are a few of the content categories that will, by nature, inspire people to take action. Facebook posts that are “awesome” are much more likely to evoke emotion that, in turn, creates a desire to engage.
Starbucks does this well in the example posts below. They’re simple, to the point and evoke enough emotion to garner over 35,000 likes and hundreds of shares.
3) Images, Images, Images. Just in case you didn’t get it … IMAGES! Facebook has told us time and time again that images are the key to success on the Facebook platform. In fact, the most recent update to the Facebook format will force us all to start relying heavily on visuals. Try including your text over an image to boost engagement further. These types of posts require very little from the reader.
4) Ask Specific Questions … But Not Too Specific. Asking questions on Facebook is a fantastic way to get engagement. However, the types of questions you ask could have significant impact on the amount of engagement you receive. The more specific the question, the more likely you’ll get answers. Avoid asking questions that are too personal, though. Questions that require people to think about their answers more tend to go ignored. Here are a few examples of the kinds of questions you should be asking:
- What gets you going in the mornings? Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks?
- Do you work on the weekends?
- What day of the week are you most productive?
5) Be Consistent. This has always been the case – and is now truer than ever. You must post on a regular basis: If you can post once a day, including weekends, do it!
Here are a few examples of the types of consistent postings that can help boost your engagement.
- Post a catchy image and ask people to create a pithy caption
- Ask your community to participate in a weekly poll
- Challenge people to answer a weekly trivia question
