You don’t need to look too far back to a time when the vast majority of phone calls took place via landline – and communications were handled by one national telephone giant. Then, thanks to advancements in technology, everything changed.

An explosion of affordable mobile phone service opened up the telecommunications market and allowed new players to claim a slice.

These companies seemed to come out of nowhere, boldly brandishing their strange new names: Orange, Vodafone, 3, O2 and so on. But it didn’t take long for people to adopt mobile technologies and place their trust in these brands. Today we recognise them as household names. They rose from obscurity to become stock market giants.

So here we are again. Last century, it was mobile phones that reshaped the telecom market; today, it’s cloud computing that’s shaking things up. These are exciting times, with voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) technology providing entirely new possibilities in the way we work and communicate. However, things can also prove confusing. Once again, a crop of new companies are weighing in with their various offerings.

It’s therefore understandable that quite a few businesses are uncertain about what a VoIP service can do (and who can be trusted to provide the best VoIP service).

Indeed, a survey the RingCentral UK team recently commissioned found a lack of awareness about hosted VoIP’s many benefits. The survey, which involved a wide range of UK SMEs, suggests that there is a great need for education around VoIP and its capabilities.
