That is, until recently. This change should be welcome, among even discounters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s mounting evidence to support that it is relevance consumers increasingly seek:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eagleeye.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eagle Eye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the digital marketing company where I work,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pressreleases.responsesource.com\/news\/96578\/consumers-more-aware-than-ever-of-ability-to-opt-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surveyed 4,000 consumers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about what influences their choice of retailer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, price came out top. This is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eagleeye.com\/insights\/blog\/loyalty-is-dead-long-live-loyalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lesson early grocery loyalty schemes learned 30 years ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would contend that getting to know who your best customers are and using this knowledge to improve their <a href=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/definitive-guide-customer-experience\/\">customer experience<\/a> (CX) should be a prerequisite of any attempt to recognise them or increase relevance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every consumer business must understand how to offer transactional and emotional value in the form of cost-savings, added convenience, or increased recognition and\/or relevance in order to win with customers today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in categories other than grocery and food and beverage, which can rely on frequency to provide the value exchange of loyalty points for a view of habits and preferences, the \u201cgive to get\u201d dynamic is very real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using this dynamic to improve the CX is even easier in today\u2019s digital world, where joining up a view of customers\u2019 online and offline shopping journeys should also be a priority. Use data to drive this insight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, ideally, a business should ensure any data-driven customer insight is used to guide action that can drive loyalty, as well as one more visit or sale. Even better to incentivise them to identify themselves each time too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Enhancing the customer experience<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is customers are more willing to share their information if you can make their CX faster, more convenient, useful and, of course, relevant. Engaging digitally, via mobile, can provide these capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time has also proven that, in spite of all the technological innovation over the last few decades, customers still appreciate basic communications that recognise and, if possible, thank them for their regular custom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other tactics include using promotions to track and measure the cost of customer acquisition and retention.
