What is \u2018uptime\u2019?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Simply put, uptime is the percentage of time, per quarter, that a given cloud-based app is up and running. Most enterprise communications providers offer Service Level Agreements (SLAs) that commit to a certain minimum percentage of uptime in a given period (or, conversely, maximum downtime). The closer the percentage is to 100%, the less projected downtime per quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is \u2018Five 9s availability\u2019?<\/span><\/h2>\n

99.999% availability<\/span><\/a> (also known as \u2018Five 9s\u2019) means that an app has less than 78 seconds of downtime per quarter. This is widely considered the holy grail of availability \u2013 remaining online virtually the entire time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, not every company can guarantee Five 9s, and lower guarantees can potentially mean significant downtime. For example, 95% availability \u2013 which sounds like a high number \u2013 actually equates to around 18 days of downtime annually.<\/span><\/p>\n
