We\u2019re approaching the anniversary of the first lockdown in the UK. What are the next 12 months supposed to look like?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time last year I was saying \u2018<\/span><a href=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/capability-work-remotely-expected-norm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The capability to work remotely is simply expected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019. It still is, of course \u2013\u00a0but expectations have evolved since then, along with business needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best businesses took extra steps to keep employees connected and engaged through the remote working experience. That investment doesn\u2019t stop there. As the UK opens up, businesses are still in the process of reshaping how work is done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BBC made a headline out of Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-56192048\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calling mass remote working \u2018an aberration\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s true, but it\u2019s not a binary discussion anyway, it\u2019s more a question of relative value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which way of working brings more relative value to your business?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For less experienced employees, it makes sense to have more direct contact. It\u2019s easier to build relationships and rapport \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ObVl6ZkOrp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and grow social capital<\/a> \u2013\u00a0through in-person interaction and coincidental connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote working could be more suitable for autonomous employees who have a well established network in the organisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wherever the balance lies for your business, you\u2019ll need to find it yourself \u2013 when it comes to employee experience, one model doesn\u2019t fit all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the question of <a href=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/remote-work-resources\/\">remote work<\/a> or \u2018return to\u2019 work, how do your expectations as an employer measure up against those of your employees?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over in the US, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringcentral.com\/us\/en\/blog\/how-were-thinking-about-remote-work-in-2021\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PWC found 68% of execs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> think staff should be in the office at least three days a week once it\u2019s possible. More than half of employees, on the other hand, want to be remote three days or more a week, and 29% want to be remote five days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this kind of disconnect we need to somehow overcome \u2013 or risk falling behind as we struggle to reestablish business as usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So things are a bit more complicated these days. But where there\u2019s challenge, there\u2019s opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t expect all your customers to contact you the same way \u2013 customers have a variety of preferred channels. Nor do you expect all your customer journeys to be the same. Some customers linger at the top of the funnel for a long time, while some enter mid-funnel and convert quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, it\u2019s a mistake to expect all your employees to work the same way. Employees were taking notice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re still in a defining period. Exactly how are we reshaping the world of work? While we might not be able to see a sharp picture, there are clues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employee experience is going to play a massive part. Flexible working, redefining productivity and rethinking employee engagement are all factors in this. Expectations have shifted, and in order to attract and retain talent, and maintain productivity in your business, you will need to change the way you manage employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/the-definitive-guide-to-hybrid-working-what-it-is-why-your-business-should-adopt-it\/\">Hybrid work<\/a> will be with us for a number of years. That means you\u2019ll need to facilitate a consistent employee experience whether in-office or remote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology plays a role in this, as does business culture. Screens, streams and immersive experiences bridge the gap between the real and the remote. Greater consideration towards accessibility, and new guidelines around etiquette and expectations, help get the best out of using those tools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you can\u2019t just throw technology at the problem and expect the pieces to assemble themselves. It will take some time and attention, but that\u2019s probably the most worthwhile investment you can make for your business right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, you can benefit greatly by supporting remote work as part of your employee experience, but of course you need to do it well. It needs to be a natural extension of how work is done anywhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot to think about here. I\u2019ve asked more questions than I\u2019ve answered.
