As one of my executive colleagues recently said to me, \u201cWe feel like we\u2019re making things up as we go.\u201d This feeling, shared by many in corporate leadership positions, is why it\u2019s essential that each leader exhibits strong change management within their businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change management is not a new concept among business leaders by any means. Over the last 50 years, much has been written about how to manage change, the key building blocks for change management, and how to implement a change management programme. What makes this point in time so vastly different is the collective impact that has been felt by virtually every business across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As most of the world slowly begins the process of adapting to the new normal of work\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insert video conferences, <a href=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/remote-work-resources\/\">working from home<\/a> and the potential elimination of offices as we once knew it here\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are a few things leaders can do to manage these changes and ensure their teams\u2019 productivity and well-being continues to flourish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for the bright spots\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One may wonder, and rightly so, if there are any bright spots that have occurred over the last six months since offices closed and the majority were forced to find a way to work from home. Rest assured that in most circumstances there are always bright spots that can be found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This term \u201cbright spots\u201d is not uniquely mine. It\u2019s taken from Chip and Dan Heath, authors of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Switch-Change-Things-When-Hard\/dp\/0385528752\/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1CKOYQIGLF1H5&amp;dchild=1&amp;keywords=switch+heath&amp;qid=1597841119&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=Switch+heath%2Caps%2C191&amp;sr=1-2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The concept is to identify those things or those people that are performing well and look to springboard off of those as a positive step forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, you may have an employee who has excelled at the change, has developed a new approach to work, and improved their productivity and overall performance. It was my new boss, who I had yet to meet in person. Despite this interpersonal deficit, he began to tell me in the strictest of terms all of the changes that were coming to our department. As he ended the conversation he told me, \u201cSo you can either get on the change train or stay at the station. I expect your answer first thing on Monday morning.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never mind that the words \u201cchange train\u201d had just left his mouth, I was still processing all of the changes that had been described and how many of them were impacting me and my ability to advance my career within the organisation. His sheer lack of understanding and any kind of empathy was astounding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was this call that was the catalyst for me leaving the organisation within a few weeks, and it highlights the importance of understanding when implementing change. Change can often be hard and leave people (who are at the heart of any business) feeling uncertain. Giving room for these emotions and time for employees to process, ask questions, and give input so they can adapt more readily is vital to leading change and making it last.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fringcentr.al%2F2UktPhx&#038;text=Do%20you%20actually%20lead%20change%20by%20example%3F%20Does%20your%20behaviour%20as%20a%20leader%20demonstrate%20the%20change%20you%20are%20looking%20to%20drive%20within%20your%20organisation%3F%20&#038;via=RingCentralUK&#038;related=RingCentralUK' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Do you actually lead change by example? Does your behaviour as a leader demonstrate the change you are looking to drive within your organisation?  <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fringcentr.al%2F2UktPhx&#038;text=Do%20you%20actually%20lead%20change%20by%20example%3F%20Does%20your%20behaviour%20as%20a%20leader%20demonstrate%20the%20change%20you%20are%20looking%20to%20drive%20within%20your%20organisation%3F%20&#038;via=RingCentralUK&#038;related=RingCentralUK' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lead by example<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have often heard great leaders say, \u201cI have never asked my team to do anything I was not willing to do myself.\u201d This is true of many, but the question that always pops into my head is, \u201cBut did you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s one thing to say you\u2019re willing to do this or that as a leader, but do you actually lead change by example? Does your behaviour as a leader demonstrate the change you are looking to drive within your organisation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the answer is no, then your approach to change management and the outcomes will most likely fall flat. The strongest leaders often lead by example, and this is true when implementing and managing change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for businesses to thrive in this period of time, they need strong leadership at every level.
