Amid all the chaos, the CFO plays a strong leadership role for the business in stabilising the business and positioning it to thrive when conditions inevitably do improve. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This blog summarises the findings in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/crisis-solutions\/covid-19\/global-cfo-pulse.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PWC CFO Global Pulse Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted in June 2020 and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/uk\/en\/pages\/finance\/articles\/deloitte-cfo-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deloitte UK CFO Survey <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted in July 2020 whilst offering post pandemic C-level strategies to survive the new paradigm. The feedback from CFOs across the globe serves as an unofficial barometer of corporate sentiments and neatly summarises the new realm of CFO conundrums. To summarise:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PWC found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as CFOs implement return-to-work strategies, they are most concerned about the effects of a global economic downturn (60%) and the <\/span><b>possibility of a new wave of infection (58%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having already made the necessary financial decisions to maintain operations in the short term, businesses are now pivoting towards driving turnover. At the same time, 80% of respondents are implementing cost containment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% of CFOs expect<\/span><b> it will take more than six months to get back to business as usual (BAU)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Deloitte found that UK CFOs felt that demand would not go to BAU until summer 2021.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies are embracing new ways of working, with <\/span><b>52%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reporting that they plan to make <\/span><b>remote work a permanent option<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for roles that allow, and 52% saying they plan to improve the remote working experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CFOs are increasingly facing the difficult decision of eliminating services to reduce cash outflows, or negotiating deferrals to push cash payments into an uncertain future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deloitte found that UK CFOs felt that <\/span><b>COVID-19 is the greatest risk facing their businesses. Brexit is third on the risk list<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after geopolitics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The time to reflect is behind us, and the time to act is now. RingCentral UK has accumulated a summary of post-pandemic CFO strategies on how you can make sure your business comes out of the crisis leaner and stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cash is king\u2014it\u2019s time to bolster your liquidity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a downturn, cash liquidity becomes essential to enterprise survival. In this environment, CFOs should consider the following steps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lola.com\/blog\/what-is-spend-management\">reducing or deferring cash spent<\/a>, as well as exploring new ways to bring cash in and improve their credit rating:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce cash outflows by cutting capabilities or terminating services are contracts that are not essential to operating.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build scenarios\u2014figure out how many weeks of liquidity your business has under various stressed business scenarios.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sharp on collections and payments\u2014processes, policies, and business-wide engagements. During economic downturns, it\u2019s natural to focus on cost-cutting. However, by staying the course on initiatives that support long-term growth, CFOs can play a critical role in financing and positioning their companies for recovery.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;79% of the CFOs are still planning to take aggressive cost containment measures&#8221; \u2013 Amity Millhiser of PWC in an interview with CFO Dive.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the services and capabilities that IT will need to deliver during and after the downturn?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New activities not directly supporting improving sales, <a href=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/definitive-guide-customer-experience\/\">customer experience<\/a>, and product innovation should be reduced.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use third-party managed services and outsource maintenance to reduce costs and improve flexibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multi-tenanted cloud-based operations should be adopted wherever possible to leverage economies of scale and process automation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce office real estate and business travel costs to reflect the changes in the ways of working.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider ditching hardware expenses when they are not necessary (e.g. use softphones on your laptops and mobiles vs having a desk phone).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use zero base budgeting and planning processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Renegotiate long-term contracts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create incentives for early payments and penalties for late payments (for your customers).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determine your USP or key differentiator\u2014ensure there is still an investment strategy to grow that muscle.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What 20% of customers are driving 80% of your sales? Real estate was also the most targeted expense in 2021 with a 3.4% reduction versus original budget plans for next year, the survey found. &#8220;CFOs we&#8217;re talking to are still in real estate footprint assessment mode, and most of their leases aren&#8217;t up for negotiation for many months, quarters, or even years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/go.ringcentral.com\/total-economic-impact-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read this Forrester report that uncovers that, on average, customers who migrate from on-premises PBX systems to RingCentral cloud products save on average about 42%.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Invest for returns and digitise your organisation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a CFO\u2019s role is to manage the firm\u2019s investment and cash strategies, COVID-19 required every C-suite member\u2019s focus to pivot to the health and well-being of their employees, workforce safety, and business continuity. Given the impact of COVID-19 on supply chains, this may be a time to diversify supplier sources and lock in critical forward contracts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider an eCommerce channel for your business.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reinvent your core: how can you build new revenue channels through leveraging technology? As CFOs reinvent their businesses, 32% of them look to tech-driven products and services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>FROM THE PWC CFO SURVEY:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PwC&#8217;s findings show that both innovation and cost containment are vital for thriving post-pandemic. &#8220;CFOs are on the front line of this,&#8221; Amity Millhiser said. &#8220;They&#8217;re balancing what\u2019s affordable with strategy. They\u2019re asking whether ongoing projects are mission-critical or not.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11039\" src=\"\/gb\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cost-cutting-areas-for-cfos-640x365.png\" alt=\"PWC and Deloitte\u2019s CFO Global Survey and the Post-pandemic CFO Cheat Sheet-121\" width=\"1000\" height=\"571\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Institute a communications plan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CFO must take a lead role in the financial and strategic communications of crisis management.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure you are promoting \u201cimplementing a cash culture\u201d to your direct finance team and department.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish incentives to reinforce \u201ccash culture\u201d so that all departments understand \u201cwhy this matters now\u201d and what their specific role is in helping to optimise cash.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have consistency in your communications plan. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/finance\/articles\/cfo-insights-employee-engagement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have also shown that a regular cadence of communication from the finance function<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps in better retaining and engaging employees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define a critical audience for each priority. You can have many different audiences, including your direct reports, your entire finance organisation, the executive committee, and the whole company.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase frequency of communications to board and investor relations to ease stock volatility.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embody transparency as much as possible\u2014transparency breaks the knowledge silos.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one knows the exact extent of the pandemic\u2019s effects on our economy, but what is clear is there\u2019s ground to make up. CFOs are key to ensuring their enterprises not only survive the current crisis but thrive in the next normal. Businesses will need to innovate\u2014which means investment\u2014while managing the counter-strategy of frugality to survive the short term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic experience has influenced attitudes towards digital transformation and has necessitated the adoption of remote work. But business evolution doesn\u2019t end there. In fact, now is the chance to actually move forward with a long-term perspective.
