HIPAA-Compliant RingCentral a Popular Booth Stop at HIMSS 2017

ringcentral himss 2017

This year HIMSS was bigger than ever, with over 45,000 attendees, even garnering attention from mainstream media. The exciting keynote from John Boehner, former House Speaker, made national news with his controversial topic, The ACA Will Not Be Repealed, Only Fixed.

The event theme was “Where the brightest minds in health and IT meet,” putting security and patient engagement top of mind for all attendees.

RingCentral was also at HIMSS, manning a large booth busy with lots of foot traffic. With RingCentral as the only MCAAS vendor at the event, and with our recent announcement that Glip is now a HIPAA Compliant Conduit, patient engagement naturally came up. Glip is now a real option for doctors working in teams to improve patient care. Glip can also help health workers optimize experiences in home health care.

For many, patient engagement initially meant offering a “patient portal,” but that no longer seems to be enough. “Positive patient engagement means reaching patients where they are and connecting with them the way they like to communicate. Patients want timely information about their health and treatment and what next steps to take,” said Molly McCarthy, RN, MBA, Chief Nursing Strategist, Microsoft US Health & Life Sciences.

Discussions about security were fueled by the FDA’s final guidance released in December, titled, Postmarket Management of Cybersecurity in Medical Devices; Guidance for Industry and Food and Drug Administration Staff. The guidance put the onus of security squarely on medical manufacturers, requiring them to have a defined process to manage security risk. Cybersecurity became one of the first questions in every conversation.

Overall, HIMSS was an informative event for everyone. Attendees were very interested in how RingCentral’s cloud-based architecture provides increased security over premise-based systems. They were also interested in how Glip, now a HIPAA compliant conduit, will improve patient engagement.
