Entrepreneurs Jon Taylor, Beverly Scott and Neil Marzacano Plug In to RingCentral

We at RingCentral would like to say thank you today to all those who have served in the armed forces. In honor of Veterans’ Day, we are sharing the stories of RingCentral customers who are proud to be both veterans and business owners. Here’s what they had to say:

Machinist Mate second class (E-5) – US Navy

Tell us about your business.

I own and operate Mister Quick Pick Lock and Road Service, a roadside assistance and home/auto lockout service. Started in Kentucky in 2006 with a cell phone and a yellow page ad, we currently have drivers and dispatchers running calls in over 20 cities.

How do you use RingCentral?

Aside from using our 800 number for marketing purposes, we receive calls from many auto clubs while driving. They provide us all the information we need for our next job. We used to either have to pull over to write down the information down, or try writing while we were driving, which was dangerous. Now, we simply tell them to fax it to our RingCentral fax number, and it gets delivered right to our phones. Not to be overly dramatic, but this convenience has undoubtedly prevented countless accidents and quite possibly saved lives!

How has serving in the military prepared you to become a business owner?

Military service definitely played a huge role in preparing me for starting and running my own business. The discipline and strong work ethic taught and required in the service are valuable traits in the civilian world. We have many former and even current service members working in our territories. We also encourage veterans to consider starting and running their own Mister Quick Pick licensed territories.

Do you have any advice to give other small business owners?

Find something that you really enjoy doing and do it better than anyone else. Our business is all about helping people in need. From flat tires to dead batteries, people are stranded until we arrive and extremely happy to see us. Every one of the drivers who works with us will tell you that they love helping people.

beverly1Beverly Scott
Owner – Beverly’s Business and Design Services, Beverly’s Real Estate Services
Spec. 4 – U.S. Army

Tell us about your business.

I am the owner of two small businesses: one that provides design and editing services and one where I work with clients who sell and/or purchase real estate.

How do you use RingCentral?

I use RingCentral for faxing (receiving and sending documents). RingCentral has proven to be very helpful – especially in my real estate business. With the advent of digital signatures, it is no longer burdensome for my clients who are out of town to obtain the required signatures on the multitude of documents involved in a real estate transaction. I often have my clients sign using this method, and then I fax the documents to myself to get them in PDF format. Then, I can upload them to DocuSign. I am then able to prepare the documents for signatures and send them to my clients. RingCentral has made this process extremely easy, and my clients’ transactions that much more efficient and less stressful.

How has serving in the military prepared you to become a business owner?

Where my military service has helped the most is in the skills it has provided me. I was a photojournalist and editor for the U.S. Army. Working in public relations and learning about writing, newspaper design, and photography played a key role in my business successes.

Do you have advice to give other small business owners?

The best advice I have to share is to embrace technology rather than be afraid of it. Technology can help all businesses. I’ve seen too many businesses and independent contractors brush off technology and later fail due to their unwillingness to embrace this component of business.

Neil Marzacano
Owner – National Toner and Ink, Inc.
E-5 Sergeant – U.S. Marines

Tell us about your business.

I saw a need back in 1986 for a low-cost solution for printer and copier supplies. Back then, much of the need was for dot-matrix printers and ribbons, which we still actually provide. We have over 20 different locations across the nation that we ship our products from. We have established relationships with many manufacturers over the last two decades to ensure quality products in order to best serve the needs of our clients. We have carefully selected them primarily based on quality product. However, I have never forgotten the goal of providing a low-cost solution to companies in order for them to save money.

How do you use RingCentral?

We use RingCentral for our fax. The convenience of obtaining our faxes via email and being able to send faxes from our computers has made the business more efficient.

How has serving in the military prepared you to become a business owner?

The structure and discipline of the military taught me to be organized. The physical component of the military, which pushes you beyond your limits and teaches you what you can achieve when you put your mind to it, is a great lesson.

Do you have any advice to give other small business owners?

Through trial and error, your business may or may not succeed the first time. But, if it does fail, pick yourself back up and start over again. I believe with perseverance and dedication, anyone can succeed. It is not a one-day thing; it takes a period of time to run and nurture a successful business.
