Does Your Business Comply with the California Court BYOD Ruling?

california capitolAs described in the National Law Review, on August 12, 2014 the California Court of Appeals ruled that when employees must use their personal cell phones for work-related calls, California labor law requires the employer to reimburse them “a reasonable percentage of their cell phone bills.” The court did not define a “reasonable percentage”.

What does this mean for California based businesses? Many are saying that this ruling means that ‘BYOD is dead.‘ However, this is not true. There are many solutions possible to enable BYOD in the workplace without it costing more for employers. With RingCentral, companies have different options to adapt to this new ruling. The ruling applies to companies headquartered in California. It also applies to California-based employees of outside companies. (Please note, similar rulings may eventually be adopted by other states.)
