Patent Counsel - Small Company

Location: San Mateo, California

Job Description:

Ring Central is actively seeking an in-house Patent Prosecution Counsel who wishes to assist this rapidly growing SaaS/VoIP Telecom company in building a world-class patent portfolio.

Responsibilities:

Primarily, you will be drafting, filing, and prosecuting patents on software-based technology.

You will also –

• Regularly interact with and manage the work of outside patent “Prep and Pros” attorneys.
• Lead invention-mining sessions, and participate in the selection of inventions for patenting.
• Assist in managing the RingCentral patent portfolio, and provide IP guidance in software development, including open source licensing.

Operating within the close-knit patent team, you will assist in executing RingCentral’s patent strategy, integrating the latest developments in patent law. You will become instrumental in protecting RingCentral’s exciting communication technology, and generating valuable corporate assets. You may also become involved in protecting RingCentral’s trademarks and in a variety of other IP issues.

Position reports to the Associate General Counsel, Intellectual Property.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Junior/mid-level patent prosecution attorney with 2 to 4 years of law firm experience in patent preparation and prosecution (focused on software patents).
• Admitted to USPTO and the California Bar (or Registered In-House Counsel). Past corporate experience a plus.
• BA/BS in Computer Science (CS) with the ability to quickly grasp software advances. Past software development and/or Telecom experience a plus.
• Proven ability to work independently and in a tight-knit legal team in a fast-paced environment.
• Energetic attitude with a sense of humor.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills.
• Some international travel may be required.
