IP Phone Hardware

Definition: An IP phone, or Internet Protocol phone, is a special telephone unit which uses the Internet to permit voice communications across different locations. It works by converting voice into IP packets before transmitting them through a communications system.

Benefits

  • More affordable than the traditional telephone line. Calls made through IP phones cost less than those made through traditional phone lines. For instance, long distance calls and taxes are considerably lower with an IP phone service. Also, some IP phone service providers offer discounts.
  • Mobility and flexibility. Since IP phones primarily use the Internet, you can practically set them up anywhere there is an Internet connection. You can also set up extensions anywhere you need to. For instance, if you have telecommuters working in your team, you can have local extensions set up for them.
  • Increased communications capabilities. With IP phones, you have access to advanced features that enable you to improve the way you communicate within your team.
